Rufus May

My Story

Rufus May has worked as a clinical psychologist in the UK for 25 years. He has a special interest in compassionate and holistic approaches to mental health and healing from adversity. His interest is originally rooted in his own experiences of being treated for psychosis as an eighteen year old and subsequent recovery.. His interests include in communication skills, mindful movement, voice dialogue and community development. Since 2017 he has lead a psychology team in an in-patient mental health service,  He co-trains with his partner Elisabeth Svanholmer and they have trained people in various parts of the world including the U.S,, Canada, Australia, Greece and Italy. They share resources they have created at www.openmindedonline.com. He is also involved in an initiative called Lets Face Change to think about how psychology can contribute towards addressing racial inequalities/racism in mental health services. His work trying to promote a ore optimistic ad less medicalised approach to mental health led to media work which included inspiring the Independent on Sunday's mental health campaign and a Channel 4 documentary 'The Doctor who hears voices' about how he supported a junior doctor who was hearing voices (see www.rufusmay.com).
